The following morning, Darla received a call from the police station. Her mother was being let out on bail, and of course that meant she needed to be picked up. Darla took the rental car her mother had gotten for her time in Bluffton and sped off first thing.

She entered the station, surveying the area and eventually finding her mother filling out some paperwork. Though her mom looked just as professional as she had when she’d been arrested, the woman was scowling, clearly giving everyone a hard time.

“You all will most certainly be hearing from my lawyer,” she assured them as she charged her bail money on her exclusive members-only credit card.

“I’m sure we will, ma’am,” one of the officers said. The young man looked defeated, and Darla imagined that her mother had been arguing with him since her arrest.

“You hanging in there, Mom?” Darla asked, coming up to relieve the poor officers who were still dealing with her mother’s attitude.

“I’m fine,” she said. “Looking forward to a proper shower. If you can call that bathroom shower of yours proper, that is.”

Darla swallowed the nasty comment on the tip of her tongue. “Yeah, glad to have you back, Mom,” Darla said, escorting her mother out the front door and toward the rental.

“I hope you drove this car carefully. The last thing I need is to owe a stupid rental car company after the bail money I just had to charge on my credit card,” the woman said, huffing.

Darla could not entirely blame her mother for her foul mood. She’d spent the last couple of days in jail, after all. “Well, let’s get you home. I pulled out some stuff to make breakfast. I thought you’d want something good to eat.”

Nerissa sighed and nodded, letting some of her frustrations go. “Actually, that sounds lovely. Thank you, Darla.”

Darla drove her mother home and sent her off to the bathroom to shower while she prepared breakfast. She tossed her purse down in one of the bar chairs and got right to work on frying up some bacon. She made biscuits and even prepped some gravy from the bacon before scrambling up some eggs. By the time the biscuit timer was going off, the eggs were just finishing, and her mother was making her way back into the kitchen, looking refreshed.

“Smells wonderful,” she said. “Thank you for breakfast.”

“You’re welcome,” Darla said, and she prepared each of them a plate.

Darla snagged her purse from the bar stool, wanting to pull out her planner to go over lawyer meetings and other important scheduling. When she lifted her purse to the table, her mother reached around just in time to prevent the tablet from falling out.

“Easy, Darla!” her mother exclaimed, rescuing it just in time. “Wow. That’s a expensive tablet. How can you afford something like this?”

Lovely, Darla thought, annoyed. “It’s not mine,” she said as they both sat down. “Actually, it’s…” She bit her bottom lip, contemplating on whether or not to share with her mother what she’d done the day before.
